Celestun Bioshpere Reserve
For those who wish to discover the wildlife of the Yucatán Peninsula, the Special Biosphere Reserve of Celestun is a real treat. The park is located 56 miles west of Mérida and expands for 146,000 acres. It is a combination of coastal scrub, estuary, and mangrove, which together provides an excellent habitat for wildlife of many sorts. Probably best know for its Flamingos, the reserve also hosts over 300 species of birds and an array of reptiles such as crocodiles, iguanas and sea turtles. This fascinating reserve is visited by boat which allows visitors to get up and close to the majestic wildlife.
